SCHOOL DISCRIMINATION
Similarly to sexual orientation, gender identity becomes clear around the time of puberty. There are estimated to be roughly 1.3 million middle schoolers who identify under the transgender label. Transgender youth face discrimination that includes banning the use of the restroom that matches their gender identity, participation in sports and use of locker rooms, school dress codes, bullying and harassment, gender and sexual identity curriculum, and name and sex designation on school records. 59% of transgender students have been denied use of the restrooms that match their gender identity, and 75% of transgender students feel unsafe in their school environments. This kind of harassment is particularly dangerous because transgender youth have an increased risk of anxiety, depression, and suicidal tendencies - to which discrimination and bullying could contribute to. We cannot punish children for expressing their identity and living as their true selves.
