I WANT TO BE MORE ACCEPTING AND SUPPORTIVE OF MY TRANSGENDER FRIENDS AND FAMILY. WHERE DO I START?
First and foremost, wanting to be an ally to the transgender community is the first and best step to take. Here are things that cisgender people can do to make the world a better place for trans people:
-
When a transgender person asks you to use the name or pronoun that matches their gender identity, make that change to the best of your ability. Being called by the wrong name or pronoun can make trans people feel as though their identity isn't valid. If you are unsure of someone's pronouns, just ask!
-
When you witness harassment or discrimination of any kind towards a transgender person, stand up for them.
-
Educate yourself on proper terminology and labels. Avoid words like "tranny", "hermaphrodite", and using transgender as a noun instead of an adjective. Don't mix up drag queens and cross-dressers with trans people.
-
Make sure the trans people in your life know that you're there for them unconditionally, and that you love them no matter what!
By spreading love and setting a good example, we can drive out bias and hatred.
